Subtle Math - Beautiful Flower
Origami Bonsai Instant Flowers were invented by Benjamin John Coleman, a former high school math teacher in February of 2010. These flowers present a unique opportunity for children to learn mathematical concepts and principles without knowing they're learning math. Whether they are used as part of a structured lesson, or as a toy for entertainment purposes, children learn to manipulate what is initially a two dimensional object, and convert it into a three dimensional object.
Many learning opportunities present themselves during this experience. Most importantly, the child creates something of beauty. This builds self-esteem. Children should be encouraged to try to fold all the flower designs. They should also be encouraged to try combining different petal styles, or even to develop their own, unique flower.
